Have we ever wondered which is the organization responsible for maintaining International Peace and Harmony across the world? Have we ever thought how does this organization function? This Organisation is none other than United Nations Organisation which was established on 24th October 1945. The founding members of the United Nations Organisation were Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill known as big three in the year 1945. The United Nations Organisation has recently completed 75 years. Let’s us understand about the United Nations Organisation and have a look at its major achievement’s.
Before we understand about United Nations let us understand what was the main reason behind establishment of United Nations. The main reason was failure of League of Nations. The First World War was from 1914 -1918. After the First World War many nations felt there was a need for an organisation which would maintain international peace and prevent war. This lead to establishment of League of Nations. League of Nations responsibility was to prevent any war from happening and maintain peace. However League of Nations miserably failed to prevent Second World War from happening. After Second World War the United Nations Organisation was formed.

The United Nations Organisation has its headquarters in New York, U.S.A. currently there are 193 Member nations who are a part of U.N.O. The United Nations organization works with the assistance of 6 major organs and various specialized Agencies. The six Major organs in no particular order are Security Council, International Court of Justice, General Assembly Trusteeship Council, Economic and Social Council and the Secretariat. The permanent members of Security Council are USA , U.K , Russia , China and France. Have you ever wondered how does the flag of United Nations look? The United Nations flag is light blue in colour and has the UN emblem in the Centre UN emblem is basically twin olive branches which embrace the polar map of the world. On 20th October 1947 the flag was adopted. The United Nations Organization has 6 official languages which are in no particular order Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish and English. The current Secretary General of United Nations is Antonio Gutterres.
Let us look at major achievements of United Nations Organization. First Major Achievements of United Nations is the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. [1] Why is Sustainable Development Goals one the achievement is because before working on solutions directly one of the main aspects is establishing areas which need solution. UN SDGs have successfully laid up the key issues of concern which sets up a platform to work for the same. UN SDGs also would act as guidelines for various member of the United Nations. In total there are 17 Sustainable goals. The agency which plays a major role in implementation of SDG’s is United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Following are some of the sustainable development goals Zero Hunger , No poverty ,Gender Equality, Climate Action and Quality Education.
United Nations has also made one of the most remarkable achievements in humanitarian aspects. United Nations General Assembly adopted Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10th December 1948. This was the Primary Step which characterized basic human rights and laid a step stone for human rights.
United Nations has significantly worked towards cultural rights. UNESCO – United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural organization adopted World heritage Convention in 1972. It connects preservation of cultural properties and Natural conservation. This is one of the significant achievements of UN because this is the fundamental step to protect history and culture.
‘The UN was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity from hell’ these were the words of Dag Hammarskjöld Second Secretary General of United Nations. Let’s us all understand about this organization and celebrate its completion of 75 years and support it in all its initiatives to maintain international peace.Let us all aim to establish universal Solidarity.
