How the encounter of Vikas Dubey consolidates Yogi Adityanath’s power in the state.

Uttar Pradesh has always been known for its nexus of politicians and criminals. Every Criminal has a godfather in politics and every politician has a godfather in crime. It is a mutually convenient relationship for both the parties. This nexus however does not really help the 99.9% population which receives no output out of it. Or the only output they get is negative. The police knows about the whole consortium but hardly can put their ‘long hands’ of justice anywhere. The force in the past was a mute spectator. And the populace helpless.

The very surprising rise of Yogi Adityanath actually resulted in everyone’s calculations go wrong. So many names and so many equations pitched by the media went into the dustbin when Yogi took on the reins. And mind you when I say he took the reins; he took a lot of them. The Chief Minister holds more than 15 ministries and one of them is ‘home’. This is not a new trend for the BJP chief ministers. You see a similar practice followed by Former CM of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis.

Keeping the Home portfolio serves dual purpose, first one is to have a direct control over the law and order situation of the state and second (more important) to keep a check on your opponents inside and outside the party. For the purpose of this article we will focus on the first mentioned purpose. CM Yogi has used the first purpose to its fullest, giving a strong blow to the very criminal-politician nexus which was mentioned earlier. Yogi has maintained to keep his image clean even after being in politics for more than 20 years. Thus, it is safe to say that he does not have any criminal godfather as such, who’s existence benefits him. However, existence of any other god father in crime who aids his opponents inside or outside the party is a potential threat to his political position. Eliminating them through such extra-judicial methods takes off the covers from his opponents and also secures the purpose of making his public image as a strong man against crime. This consolidates his power politically, as people would want to vote for someone who doesn’t tolerate crime-jail-bail non-sense and, any attempt to weaken his power through political manoeuvring through the help of strong-men in crime is potentially wiped off. Yogi firmly knows he only has one godfather and he sits in 7 Lok Kalyan Path.
